Text Box: Inspector our herd buck for 2009

We have a herd of Spanish meat goats with Cashmere fleece. This makes them a Dual-purpose breed, providing meat and fleece. We find they have even more purposes...adding to the Biodiversity on the farm, contributing to the benefits of multi-species grazing by eating plants that cows or sheep might not ( thistles, leafy spurge, other so-called weeds ). They are curious and inquisitive, alert and wary. Their faces always seem to have a smile.

Cashmere can be found on any breed of goat, the fleece must meet certain criteria to be classed as the real thing.

To be “true” cashmere, the fibre must be 1-1 1/2” in length, have a micron measurement finer than 19.5, have good crimp, and low lustre. We use a variety of methods to determine the fleece quality, including histograms and fleece show grading.

His fleece placed second in the buck fleece show and Inspector was Grand Reserve Champion at Farm Fair International cashmere fleece competition in Edmonton,        2008

Cashmere goats have two types of fibres:

Longer, coarse guard hair and the soft, fine undercoat that is the luxury cashmere fibre.

Our herd is mostly white, with some browns and lighter beige.
